ATLANTA LAWSUIT ATTORNEY FOR ATTUNE KNEE SYSTEM FAILURE
The first-ever lawsuit was filed two weeks ago against DePuy Synthes’ ATTUNE Knee System in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. The lawsuit is believed to be the first of many involving premature failings of the tibial implant-cement interface. If you or a loved one has suffered injuries due to an ATTUNE Knee Replacement surgery, the dedicated personal injury attorneys at Schneider Hammers are here to fight for you.
WHAT IS THE ATTUNE KNEE SYSTEM?
The ATTUNE Knee System by DePuy Synthes was designed to help the knee muscles and ligaments work harmoniously together with a greater range of motion. Innovative, patented technology was invented for this system, including:
- ATTUNE GRADIUS Curve – Helps provide smooth motion and stability for everyday activities.
- GLIDERIGHT Articulation – Optimizes how the patella interacts with the rest of the knee.
- AOX Polyethylene – An advanced plastic material which acts as a spacer that goes in between the tibia and femur to replace the cartilage.
WHAT WENT WRONG?
According to a recent article in the Journal of Knee Surgery, many orthopedic surgeons reported that they have experienced an unsettling number of premature failures of the ATTUNE Knee System. The failures are due to the de-bonding of the tibial implant-cement interface. Orthopedic Design & Technology explains debonding as “the ’glue’ typically used to hold an implant in place does not ’stick’ adequately to the tibial component of the Attune Knee System. As a result, the tibial component of the Attune Knee System loosens and the entire knee replacement is destabilized.”
Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing for certain how many patients were implanted with this device. Until DePuy Synthes issues a recall and accurately informs physicians of the dangers, thousands of patients are at risk. Some of the reported side effects of the ATTUNE Knee System failure include:
- Persistent pain
- Unusual swelling
- Decreased range of motion
- Instability and loosening
More often than not, patients who experience a premature failure of their ATTUNE Knee System are forced to endure a second surgery to remove and replace the implant. Some have said that these modification surgeries are even more painful and difficult to withstand than the original surgery.
There are over 600,000 knee replacement surgeries performed in the United States each year, and due to the delayed retirement age and rise in obesity, that number is expected to reach 3 million by 2030. The lawsuit filed against DePuy Synthes in Alabama is believed to be followed by hundreds, if not thousands, of additional lawsuits by injured patients and their families.
