Monsanto Roundup Lawsuits

Monsanto Roundup Lawsuits

A growing number of studies are showing that glyphosate, a key ingredient in Roundup, could be a carcinogen. As a result, manufacturers Monsanto could be facing thousands of lawsuits around the country. The already filed Monsanto Roundup lawsuits allege that the company neglected to warn users about the increased risk of cancer.

Schneider Hammers is seeking compensation on behalf of people who have been harmed by Roundup. We’re helping individuals who have been diagnosed with B-Cell or T-Cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Plaintiffs in Monsanto Roundup lawsuits may have developed subtypes of the disease. These include mantle cell lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and hairy cell leukemia.

What Do We Know About the Monsanto Roundup Lawsuits?

Ongoing lawsuits argue that Monsanto knew of a connection between the use of Roundup and cancer for more than three decades. However, the company opted not to warn the public. Instead, it focused on the weed killer’s safety in its marketing materials. Monsanto said it was as safe as table salt and pretty much non-toxic to people, birds, fish, and pets.

Legal documents now show the lengths to which the company went to convince various parties that Roundup was safe. Monsanto lashed out at scientific studies which exposed the dangers of the product. Meanwhile, it created its own false data and spread misinformation to farmers, government agencies and the public at large. The documents also claim that Monsanto conspired with the EPA to keep the connection a secret.

What Are Some of The Side Effects and Injuries Caused by Roundup?

The most serious side effect of exposure to the herbicide is the development of cancers. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, B-cell lymphoma, and leukemia are the most common.

Farm workers and others whose jobs require exposure to Roundup are most at risk. These include landscapers and people who work in nurseries and garden centers. They are likely to inhale glyphosate when they mix it, spray it or cleanup after use. However, Roundup can also be dangerous to people who consume contaminated food or water.

Around 70,000 people are diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in the United States each year. B-cell lymphoma accounts for 90% of the cases while T-cell accounts for around 10%. The symptoms include night sweats, fever, stomach pain, chest pain, swollen lymph nodes and appetite loss. If you’ve been experiencing these symptoms after prolonged or frequent use of Roundup, you should see a doctor immediately.

What Are Some of The Roundup Settlement Amounts?

Monsanto has been losing Roundup cases in court. The first trial involved a school groundskeeper. He successfully argued that his extended use of Roundup and another Monsanto herbicide called Ranger Pro caused his cancer. He was awarded $289 million in damages.

In May, a jury in California ordered that the Monsanto pay $2.055 million in damages to elderly couple Alva and Alberta Pilliod. The two used Roundup for more than three decades and they were both diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Their attorneys said the diagnoses came four years apart.

According to CNN, the massive award included $2 billion in punitive damages and more than $55 million in compensatory damages. Brent Wisner, one of the lawyers for the couple, said the verdict was a clear signal that Monsanto needed to change its actions.

However, Bayer, the parent company of Monsanto, said it would appeal the verdict. It argued that the plaintiffs relied on the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer 2015 report which was an “outlier”. Bayer pointed to the US Environmental Protection Agency’s statement which gave the assurance that glyphosate was not a carcinogen.

Back in March, a jury awarded a California man $80 million in damages. Edwin Hardeman, a 70-year-old, had used Roundup around his property for years. He was the second plaintiff to go to trial. The jury found that Roundup was a substantial factor in his cancer diagnosis. However, Bayer indicated that it also intended to appeal this verdict. The company said the outcome of that trial had no impact on future cases. However, Hardeman’s attorney said the case could help determine the outcome of other lawsuits.

As you can see, juries have been awarding substantial amounts in damages to plaintiffs. These awards include large sums in punitive damages. This means that average citizens are convinced that Monsanto’s behaviour is so negligent that additional punishment is needed. It means that they believe it is time that Monsanto pays for its failure to warn users.
