Back in 2015, a woman died while living at the Shepherd Hill nursing home in Lafayette. The coroner confirmed that, at the time of her death, she had more than a million mites in her body. She was argued to have died from an infestation of scabies. Now, just a few years later, there are new allegations of abuse and neglect.
Frances Palmer moved into the nursing home back in the summer of 2018. After learning that she had fallen in her room, her husband asked the staff to please add protective padding near her bed. Just 11 days later, she fell yet again.
During this second fall, Palmer suffered a fracture to her face and bleeding on the brain. Her doctor said the damage was irreversible. Sadly, Palmer died from her injuries. Her husband filed a complaint with the Lafayette police department. He alleged that the nursing home had abused and neglected his wife.
This isn’t the only time the nursing home has been in hot water of late. They have been cited for violations for the last 4 years straight. Some of the things they’re gotten in trouble for include medication errors, not maintaining a safe and clean environment, and inaccurate patient records.
The nursing home provided no comment when pressed about the incident. The widower of Frances Palmer is looking to file legal action against the nursing home. Something tells us he won’t be the only one.
Adult Protective Services, a part of the Division of Aging Services, says they did their part. They claim they forwarded the complaint filed by Palmer to the Georgia Department of Community Health.
